Fruit Rollups – that’s about the right speed for an army of 8 year olds.
This is so easy, inexpensive, you can control the amount of sugar you use & know exactly what your kids are eating.
Healthy Homemade Fruit Roll Ups
I used blackberries & raspberries (use Organic whenever you can) but you can use strawberries, bananas, mango- pretty much any fruit you like.
A quick tip- you can also buy Organic frozen fruit, just defrost them overnight.
It doesn’t take a lot of fruit to make roll Ups because they need to be spread out thin.
Now the process takes some time because you are dehydrating the fruit. Set your oven to the lowest setting (most ovens go down to 170 degrees, but some go to 150). Set the rack to the middle.
In a blender combine 4 cups of berries or fruit of your choice. Add 4 tablespoons fresh lemon juice & 1 dash of pure vanilla (if you ever see Tahitian Vanilla Extract buy it- the flavour is amazing!).
Now you can add a touch of sugar (or honey or agave) but I find you really don’t need it because the fruit is sweet enough.
Blitz until smooth. Line a baking sheet with plastic wrap. Don’t worry about the plastic melting in the oven- the temp is too low to cause melting. Don’t use wax paper or parchment- it doesn’t work as well.
Pour the blitzed fruit on the baking sheet & smooth out until you end up with a thin layer (about 1cm).
You can get creative with colours & flavours, swirl in blitzed mango into raspberries, bananas & strawberries- the combinations are endless, just avoid anything with a lot of seeds. Put it in the oven & walk away- for a long time. The low temp dehydrates the fruit. We’re talking 7-8 hours.
Another tip- dehydrate the roll ups overnight. Once the fruit has cooled you can make your strips. I use kitchen shears to cut the fruit into strips – using a knife no matter how sharp is hard. Roll your strips up & refrigerate.
That’s it people! It’s that easy!
The edges might be a little brittle & break- don’t throw this out! I call this ‘fruit glass’ & it’s awesome over Yogurt & even over a salad for some sweetness & crunch.
Enjoy & Be Well! Love, Tamara ❤👩🏻🍳🇨🇦🍓
